happy ending, at its core, is pretentious and does not quite live up to expectations, save for govinda, who lights up the screen with his mere presence and those legendary moves, says nishi tiwari. so we can say that it is average it’s the season of many a crash and burn at the movies.

ungli is about four friends -- abhay (randeep hooda), maya (kangna ranaut), kaleem (angad bedi) and gautam alias goti (neil bhoopalam) -- and their brave attempt to clean the system of corruption in their unique vigilante style. the friends are united by a tragedy that befalls their friend rajeev (arunoday singh). that makes them wear masks, roam the streets of mumbai at night, kidnap corrupt officials in a van, video tape their acts of wrongdoing and send the tapes to news channels to expose the system and change it for the larger good. in the process, they become known as the ungli gang.

oung men, crime, guns, and a newlywed boy called titli who isn’t ready to stand for any nonsense. things are gritty, realistic and intriguingly messy in the first trailer for kanu behl’s directorial debut titli, produced by dibakar banerjee and distributed by yash raj films. behl’s film will be competing in the 'un certain regard' section at this year’s cannes film festival.

aj,” the girl gasps into her cellphone, breathlessly and furtively while gangsters surround her, “some people are after me.” efficient to the last word, her man wastes no time in getting to the point: “what are they wearing?” this is but a taste of the relentless absurdity served up by action jackson, the peculiar new film from prabhudheva. it is an uneven, tacky, cheesy actioner, a film that has much going catastrophically wrong (the brunt of it involving sonakshi sinha). but it is also -- surprise, surprise -- at times incredibly zany and, more importantly, a film that strikes back against the unending misogyny routinely perpetrated by our heroes in these larger-than-life movies. in many ways, action jackson can be read as a feminist statement, a film that shows girls proactively leaping onto the top rung while the leading man languishes several footholds short of heroic. that’s right, ajay devgn is anything but a ‘hero’ in this film.

around intermission, the narrative livens up when adeep introduces a fling between aliya and one of the friends in her core group. but it doesn’t lead to something interesting and we are back on the familiar road. the use of struggling actors’ audition takes to comment on aliya’s state of mind becomes a liability after a point.

first things first, when you go to watch a rajkumar hirani film, the yardsticks are different. you don’t just pay to get entertained, but also to get enlightened, as each of his films carry a social message. in that regard, pk falls well short in the second half after an outstanding first. the first half is rip roaring and brings the house down with plenty of trademark hirani moments. in the second half, the pace begins to dip. (spoiler alert) the bomb blast scene was unnecessary and you fail to understand the purpose it served. the romantic angle between jaggu and pk was definitely not needed when a cute friendship would have sufficed just as much. the second half felt a little too similar to ‘omg: oh my god’ and the tv show scenes just did not hit home the point as well as it should have. it wasn’t even clear what hirani was trying to say. was the film about inter-religion marriage, atheism or superstition?
