Jai Gangaajal
(According to Arjun Jaiswal Jai Gangaajal is a 4 star movie)
hstory: bankipur's in the vicious grip of mla bablu pandey and goons. but what happens when sp abha mathur arrives - kya sab kuch pavitar ho jayega? review: straight away, jai gangaajal celebrates priyanka chopra in one of her most- literally - kick-ass performances. bankipur is bullied by mla bablu (manav) and brother dabloo (ninad), who rape, murder and loot farmers' lands. police's 'circle babu' bn singh (prakash) smoothly facilitates bablu-dablu while building himself a marbled palace of black money. suddenly, abha mathur (priyanka) arrives as bankipur's new sp - will bablu-dablu's party end? jai gangaajal is one of prakash jha's best stories. it weaves together crucial contemporary threads - land mafias, corrupt netas, broker-cops, broken farmers - with jha's enduring concern about vigilante justice. in his 2003 gangaajal, sp amit kumar was bewildered by frustrated cops blinding criminals - to make society 'pavitar' - with acid. here, abha mathur faces mobs hanging goons, shouting, "jo janta ko lootega, uska suicide!" can abha convince bankipur that the law must prevail - both for the innocent and the evil? and why does bn suddenly want to purify the system? priyanka chopra shines as 'madam sir' abha mathur, whose lightning slaps and lathi charges have you applauding. this is a polished, restrained priyanka, who barely smiles but conveys the ethics and empathy of the law. priyanka's ably supported by rahul bhat's cameo as an mit phd kisaan leader - rahul performs rayban radicalism with aplomb, sneering at abha visiting a distressed village, "toh ab aap aayi hain, suicide tourism par." in contrast, manav kaul, usually a sure-shot scene stealer, appears distracted, briefly coming into his own, licking his lips as he savagely beats bn, but lacking consistent power. however, the dynamics between bn and dablu convey crackling tension, their face-off electric. while ninad nails wicked, waddling dablu, fattened on the gory good life, prakash comfortably portrays a character happy with shades of grey - until he discovers khaki. there are memorable dialogues - 'aapko galat misguide kiya jar raha hai' - and sharp editing. but the film gets stretched. a sarpanch and goonda less would've kept it tighter. yet, jai gangaajal packs a punch with its panorama (a badaun-like landscape where girls are hung from trees), dilemma and performances - particularly the one by 'madam sir', who wields a lathi you will love.

Deadpool
(According to Arjun Jaiswal Deadpool is a 3 star movie)
deadpool is a 2016 american superhero film based on the marvel comics character of the same name. it is the eighth installment of the x-men film series, and is directed by tim miller. written by rhett reese and paul wernick, the film stars ryan reynolds, morena baccarin, ed skrein, t. j. miller, gina carano, brianna hildebrand, and stefan kapii. in deadpool, wade wilson hunts the man who gave him an accelerated healing factor, but also a scarred physical appearance. development of a deadpool film began in february 2004 with new line cinema. however, in march 2005, new line put the film in turnaround and 20th century fox became interested. in may 2009, after reynolds portrayed the character in x-men origins: wolverine, fox lent the film to writers, and in april 2011, miller was hired for his directorial debut. cgi test footage created by miller and reynolds was leaked in july 2014 to an enthusiastic response, leading to fox greenlighting the film that september. additional casting began in early 2015, and principal photography took place in vancouver, canada, from march to may. visual effects were provided by multiple vendors, and ranged from the addition of blood and gore to the creation of the completely computer generated character colossus. deadpool premiered in paris on february 8, 2016, and was released on february 12, 2016, in north america in imax, dlp, d-box and premium large formats. the film has broken numerous box office records and generally received positive reviews: it became the highest-grossing r-rated comic book film and highest-grossing x-men film, while critics praised reynolds' performance, the humor, and the action sequences, but criticized the plot as formulaic. a sequel has been greenlit.

Tere Bin Laden Dead Or Alive
(According to Arjun Jaiswal Tere Bin Laden Dead Or Alive is a 3 star movie)
story: after quitting his thriving halwai business in delhi's chandni chowk to make a career in films, sharma (manish paul) strikes gold with his directorial debut that features paddhi (pradhuman singh), who is a spitting image of osama bin laden. osama's untimely death shatters their plans of a sequel. meanwhile, both fbi and a mujhahideen organisation are hunting for the doppelganger. review: sequels always run the risk of falling short of expectations. in 2010, tere bin laden emerged as surprise hit with its abundant laughs and particularly smart writing. this time director abhishek sharma is hardly able to conjure up an equally enticing story. the chuckles are fewer and the wit from the first part is nowhere to be seen. franchises are mostly created for moolah and that could be a valid reason for this sequel as well, but with the lack of an effective story to go with it, the results aren't appealing. the humour is rather low-iq and most gags are far from enjoyable. the laughs are fewer and restrict themselves primarily to the first half. a certain olympia-e-dehshat is the only one scene that will have you in splits. there is something funny about a bomb relay race and watching terrorists compete to win a suicide jacket personally autographed by osama. their starstruck eyes are bound to tickle your funny bones. a good part of the first hour features ali zafar who is nothing like the clever man you remember from the 2010 original. he plays an arrogant superstar who dances to an odd item number about his six-pack abs. manish paul is earnest but the television host inside him outdoes the actor. sikander kher in his dual role is seen having a ball of a time, which reflects in his performance. iman crosson and piyush mishra are absolutely wasted. and, pradhuman singh is endearing in his part. what this oversimplistic film lacks, is sharp writing. it is entertaining in parts but once the curse of the second hour strikes, the wicked streak takes a backseat. tere bin laden : dead or alive, misses the spunk of its prequel.

Fitoor
(According to Arjun Jaiswal Fitoor is a 2 star movie)
story: artist noor loves aristocrat firdaus, daughter of begum hazrat - but what happens to noor's obsessive fitoor when firdaus decides to marry rich bilal? review: so, fitoor, based on charles dickens' great expectations, meets some expectations - but not all. in a kashmir of moonlit snows, mist-filled houses and golden leaves, noor (aditya) falls in love with firdaus (katrina), daughter of eccentric begum hazrat (tabu), who lives, covered in diamonds, in a castle of chandeliers and chintz. firdaus leaves to study. noor wins an art scholarship in delhi - where he meets firdaus again and time stands still. firdaus finally warms to noor. but what happens when firdaus decides to marry pakistani politician bilal instead? why does begum push firdaus, despite knowing noor's love? and who is noor's secret patron, making his art a hit? fitoor's acting pleases in parts. tabu shines through moments of malevolent manipulation, snarling 'kaisa kamzarf waqt aa gaya hai', as she glares balefully at noor, then smiles sweetly at him. aditya occasionally conveys a bewildered lover lost in a whimsical world while katrina looks gorgeous but mostly stays placid. ajay devgn has a cameo as a growling jihadi, all bark but no bite, while rahul bhat, the most consistent here, impresses as heavy-lidded bilal. the film also looks gorgeous - but opulence takes over substance, chinars, minars and lace dominating grip, passion and pace. for a love story, fitoor lacks heat - you wish there was less hair-styling and more hair-pulling, more rupture and less cheesecake-like smoothness. this is problematic because dickens' great expectations rises and falls, exploring terrible, tantalising class, social climbing, sharp snobberies, love, hate and shame. fitoor doesn't dive beyond the surface though, its story's shikara paddling along pretty kashmir, but never tearing its way to its violent, wailing heart like haider, its art stuck in a banal mediterranean restaurant-like world, never conveying the lonely powers of love. you get style - including six-pack noor painting shirtless (explains why artists score more - can you imagine writers taking their tops off to work?) - but little depth. to play with a great quote, oh what a tangled web we weave, when we learn to retrieve - in this case, retrieving a classic indeed caused a tangle, albeit one of pashmina dhaagas.

Sanam Re
(According to Arjun Jaiswal Sanam Re is a 5 star movie)
story: an ambitious himachali boy akash (pulkit samrat) is lured to mumbai by his dreams. he leaves his family, picturesque hometown tanakpur (shimla) and childhood sweetheart shruti (yami gautam) for the same. years later, he bumps into her in canada and time stands still, but destiny has other plans. review: a treat to the eyes, divya khosla kumar's bittersweet love story is a visual delight. gorgeously shot, every frame captures the beauty of the snow-clad mountains, narrow roads and cozy villages of himachal. the music stays with you, pulkit samrat renders a mature performance and the girls look pretty. rishi kapoor's significant cameo and chemistry with child actor neil tyagi (young akash) is endearing and deserves a special mention. though supportive, it is the finest track of the film. we wish the rest was as effective. what begins as a pursuit of happiness tale, soon loses grip and succumbs to cliche. the plot has loose ends with no backstories to justify the steps its characters take. for instance, how shruti lands up in canada, no one knows. what does she do for a living? why would akankasha (urvashi rautela, rich businesswoman who seeks real love) hide from akash that she too is his childhood friend? also, frequent slowmo dream sequences drag the film way too long. the story gets predictable as events unfold in a sluggish way. the ambiguousness surrounding yami's character is tiresome and unnecessary. unless you consider himachal as your sanam, this heartbreaking tale on sacrifice and unrequited love, loses its plot and purpose somewhere along the way, must watch movie

Neerja
(According to Arjun Jaiswal Neerja is a 3 star movie)
story: in september 1986, neerja bhanot(sonam) saves the lives of 359 passengers on a hijacked pan am plane from mumbai to new york via karachi. that she gets caught in the crossfire is a tragedy. review: neerja is the youngest daughter and the only girl in a family that has two older brothers. she is addressed as laddo(loved one) by her parents, rama(shabana) and journalist-father harish(yogendra tiku). her father's life lessons to her are, `don't let anyone kill your spirit.' quite like her screen idol, rajesh khanna from the movie anand, the spirited youngster, wants to live `a badi(big) life not a long one.' though she's bone-tired between her modelling assignments, neerja loves to fly. one fateful day, the plane is hijacked by libyan terrorists when it makes a halt at karachi. the spunky stewardess warns the pilots in the cockpit about the hijack. but, she stays back to shield the passengers. the story of this indian beti is well-known and yet director ram madhvani gives us welcome aided-recall with his deft story-telling. the in-flight drama between gun-`n'-grenade toting men and a plane-load of hapless victims, leaves you angry. the film makes you weep and mourn the ongoing acts of global terrorism. between the strife, the director also allows you a look at neerja's troubled marriage. yes, she has her reasons for being the brave heart she is. having fled from a disastrous alliance to a male chauvinist, neerja has promised herself that if ever life gives her another opportunity, she will look adversity in the eye. but darn it, 23 is still no age to die. sonam's neerja quietly seals a place in your heart. there are no theatrics; she's dignified, strong and real. shabana as the bereaved mother makes her grief yours, her daughter's glory also yours. yogendra tiku lends able support and khalil(theatre actor, jim sarbh) as the maniacal terrorist is terrific. this one raises a toast to the daunting spirit of india's daughters; every one of us must salute neerja. in-depth analysis our overall critic’s rating is not an average of the sub scores below. direction 4/5 dialogues 3/5 story 4/5 music 3/5 visual appeal 3.5/5

Loveshhuda
(According to Arjun Jaiswal Loveshhuda is a 3 star movie)
story: gaurav mehra(girish) and pooja misra(navneet dhillon) end up in bed on their first date. their love story then takes twists and turns of a different kind. review: vaibhav misra sets out to tell you, what according to him, is an unconventional bollywood story. honestly the premise is such a farce and seems so forced that even the so called bold plot leaves you cold. unlike most bollywood films that show you how boy meets girl, sings songs and then takes her to mummy; here the hero and his two sidekicks, who claim they are loveshhuda (whatever!) get wasted at gaurav's bachelor party. of course the groom-to-be doesn't know how, but he ends up sleeping with a pretty art student from london called pooja. in his drunken state he also ends up confessing to her how he hates the thought of marrying vandana, the shrew he is engaged to. her advice to him is that he should listen to his heart. but the family honour looms large. and so gaurav marries vandana, who makes his life a living hell. a few years later they divorce. cut to india. pooja is now engaged to be married to a co-worker. for her bachelorette, she ends up in mauritius. guess, what? here she meets gaurav and once again they cannot stay away from one another. aha! nothing wrong, except that the distance between the two times this couple want to jump into bed is played out through countless songs and meaningless situations. of the songs—peene ki tamana and dono ke dono are the hummable sort. but the humour is missing. the script that is inspired by the hollywood franchise hang over and the hindi franchise pyar ka punchnama comes unstuck. the whole "not being able to remember what i did in my drunken state," and reliving the scenario the next morning has no deja vu. instead, it's a terrible mishmash of nothingness. also for a romantic film to go boom, there should be real passion between its lead players. individually the boy and the girl aren't too bad but where is the chemistry between you, guys? you cannot ignite a spark here, leave alone a flame.

Direct Ishq
(According to Arjun Jaiswal Direct Ishq is a 4 star movie)
anuj sachdeva, nidhi subbaiah, manit joura, taran bajaj, simpy singh story: jd (anuj sachdeva) is looking for a perfect life partner. after his brother's marriage fell apart, he doesn't want to make any mistakes. stuck between his mother's constant nagging about getting home an ideal bahu and an astrologer's prophecy that his marriage won't last, he marries tia (nidhi subbaiah) who is perfect 'divorce-material'. meanwhile, his mother also finds a good match for him and pesters him to tie the knot with her. jd is spoilt for choices and is far from being ecstatic about it. review: you'll be at a loss of words when it comes to describing love shagun. it is regressive, silly and incoherent. this love story is overwrought and sinks due to a whirlpool of regressive ideas that forms the basis of this story. in the very first scene of the film, we find a young guy seeking love counselling from a jyotish who tells him his first marriage will end in divorce. that one scene is what determines the course of the narrative. director saandesh nayak's understanding of an enlightened, empowered woman is inappropriate. she is apparently a bully, can't make her own coffee and gets guilty pleasure from humiliating men who have a thing for her. the woman characters in the film are caricaturish and uses every possible cliche in the book. there are two vital things that are missing in this film. firstly, there is no visible chemistry between the leads. they make the journey from being strangers to lovers in no time. and next, the love story is never palpable enough. no wonder the convoluted mess fails to be heart-tugging.

Bollywood Diaries
(According to Arjun Jaiswal Bollywood Diaries is a 2 star movie)
film is way too slow, writes namrata thakker. coming straight to the point, bollywood diaries revolves around three characters that are all bitten by the acting bug. vishnu (ashish vidyarthi) is a 52-year-old middle class man living with his wife. he did theatre during his college days but could not purse his dream further as he got busy with life after marriage. as soon as he gets his daughter married, vishnu retires from his monotonous job and decides to shift base to mumbai for the love of acting. but his plan goes haywire when he learns that he has cancer and not enough time to fulfil his long impending dream. rohit (salim dewan) is a 27-year-old living in delhi with his parents. despite several attempts to become an actor, he fails. one day, he learns about a reality star hunt show and applies for it. though he isn’t good at acting, he makes it to the third round because of his crazy antics. the judges on the show encourage him as they feel his presence will boast the trp. but in the third round, rohit faces rejection and humiliation. imli (raima sen) is a prostitute living in kolkata. when daman (vineet kumar singh), an assistant film director from mumbai, arrives at her brothel in search of a story, imli realises she can fulfill her acting dream with his help. daman promises her a big bollywood launch but when he eturns to mumbai, he changes his plan and casts a popular actress instead. imli is shattered and goes to dubai to work in a posh dance bar. bollywood diaries captures the struggles of these three protagonists, and how they deal with failure. though the film has its heart in the right place, it’s too slow and predictable. but yes, there are moments in the film that are absolutely heart-wrenching. the music is surprisingly good. performance wise, all the actors have played their parts well but it's ashish vidyarthi who totally nails the role. bollywood diaries is a good attempt but fails to pack a solid punch.
